Donating Stock and Other Investment Securities to Social Justice Fund NW

Why donate stocks and other marketable securities?

Many members are enhancing their charitable giving while reducing their taxes by directly donating specific shares of appreciated securities.

Normally, when an individual member sells his or her appreciated securities and donates the proceeds, that person might be subject to tax on the gains and have less left to contribute. However, since Social Justice Fund NW is a tax-exempt entity, we don't pay capital gains tax on the sale of securities. That is why this is a popular giving technique. Of course, consult with your financial planner, accountant or estate attorney to discuss your specific situation.

How to Do It

  1. Call Social Justice Fund NW: (206) 624-4081 Ext. 12 or e-mail our Executive Director John-Paul Chaisson-Cardenas to notify him of your gift (Use our online contact form). Indicate your name, name of the investment, number of shares, and approximate value of the gift.

  2. Alert the Social Justice Fund NW investment advisor or have your broker/advisor call them with the same information about the gift being transferred. Social Justice Fund NW's advisor is:

    Progressive Investment Management (PIM),
    Attn: Paul Pitkin
    721 NW 9th Ave #250
    Portland, OR 97209
    (503) 224-7828 x12
    Or (877) 211-0034 x12

  3. Instruct your brokerage account in writing of the following:

Please transfer [quantity] shares/units of [name of your donated security]
    to: Schwab Institutional account:
    1001-0674; DTC: 0164; Tax Id: 91-1036971

  4. After Social Justice Fund NW is notified that your donated securities are received, we will acknowledge your gift with the information you need for your tax records. Please watch for this letter from us.

Thank you!

Important Notes for Stock Transfers

Sending stock certificates in the mail can be risky. If you must do so, please sign a separately mailed stock power and not the back of actual certificates. The stock power and the certificate should be sent certified mail (or equivalent) to Progressive Investment Management (see above). Social Justice Fund NW normally liquidates donations of securities.

The value of your gift may vary due to fluctuations of its value prior to our receipt.
