We believe the attack against immigrant rights is part of a broader attack on civil and human rights, one that diverts attention away from the real issues we face as a society. As long as we allow poor people, immigrants, people of color, religious minorities, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, and people with disabilities to be used as scapegoats, we will never find solutions for the real problems of poverty, the lack of access to a quality education, and the lack of affordable healthcare.
Immigration is being used as a wedge issue to exploit the black-brown divide and to distract from an erosion of rights that impacts the lives of all people across racial, ethnic and class lines.
